Frequently Asked Questions

question Why adopt from Sheltie Rescue?
answer

Rescue groups generally deal with one specific breed and have volunteers who are very knowledgeable about that breed. This translates into a great deal of accurate, firsthand information and honest answers about the specific breed that you are interested in.

Baltimore Sheltie Rescue, as with all purebred rescue groups, is interested in placing the breed that we love in new, permanent, suitable homes. Potential new owners are matched with a rescued Sheltie that suits their lifestyle.

All rescues available for adoption through Baltimore Sheltie Rescue have been spayed or neutered, heart worm tested, have had shots updated, and had a Vet check for general health.

question What kinds of Shelties are available?
answer Baltimore rescue places 50 - 100 Shelties per year! They are every size, age, and color, and have a great variety of histories and experiences.
question Where do the rescued Shelties come from?
answer

Most of the Shelties we rescue come directly from their owners, who, for some reason, cannot care for them any more. (The top 5 reasons are: moving, allergies, new baby, illness and not enough time.)

This allows us to gather quite a bit of information about the health, training, and behavior history of the Sheltie, which we pass along to the new owner.

In some cases, however, we receive Shelties from shelters or others where a background is not available. In these cases, little information is known. All rescues are welcomed into our homes and the homes of our "foster families", and during their stay, they can settle into a normal routine and be evaluated by a knowledgeable "sheltie person" before going to a new home.

question What are the requirements for adopting?
answer

The adopting family must agree to provide all necessary veterinary care and routine vaccinations. We ask that rescued Shelties be indoor pets, and that you will treat your new family member with love and kindness!

A contract, stating the above, must be signed by the adopting family. This contract also states the condition that, if any time the family can no longer keep the dog, it will be returned to Baltimore Rescue.

An adoption donation is required at the time of placement, which will help us cover the cost of veterinary services.

question What does adoption cost?
answer The adoption fee, in most cases, is $275.00.
question How do I start?
answer

Contact one of the members of Baltimore Sheltie Rescue. You will be asked a few questions about your home, lifestyle, and preferences. Your name will be added to our "waiting to adopt" list and when a Sheltie comes in that matches your lifestyle, we'll give you a call. You can then come to the home of a volunteer to meet your potential new family member.

Please keep in mind that Shelties are often reserved with strangers! One of the best ways to evaluate personality is to watch how he/she is interacting with the foster family. Shelties "bond" quickly, and once you have been "adopted", the reserve will fade.

question Will my Sheltie have registration papers?
answer AKC papers are not given, but we can supply copies of registration and pedigree if they are available. An Indefinite Listing Privilege (ILP) number can be obtained from AKC if you wish to show in performance events (such as agility, obedience, herding or tracking).
question What if it doesn't work out?
answer If for any reason, the adoption is not successful, the Sheltie is to be returned to the rescue program within 14 days of the adoption date for a full refund. Baltimore Sheltie Rescue also requires that the dog be returned to the rescue if, at any time in the future, the adopting family finds that they cannot keep the dog.
question How do I find a Sheltie Rescue Organization near me?
answer Sheltie Rescue organizations are listed by state at the American Shetland Sheepdog Association's Rescue page. Your local humane society/shelter may also be able to direct you to additional local sheltie rescues.
